Today, Blessing Mapalo is flying by plane for the very first time — from the hot skies of Africa to autumnal Poland.
When we welcomed her to Kasisi, we knew she had a congenital vision problem. But the Sisters didn’t treat it as a “closed case.” They searched, asked questions, and explored every possibility to see if anything more could be done for her. They noticed that Blessing’s sight reacted and that her right eye could focus. We managed to connect with a specialist in Lusaka, who agreed to perform surgery. And a miracle happened — Blessing began to see with one eye.
Two and a half years later, however, it turned out that she had a brain tumor. The surgery saved her life, but the surgeons had to reach the tumor through her healthy eye — the very eye Blessing used to see the world. She lost her sight as a result, but not her hope. At Kasisi, hope always dies last.
Looking at her, it’s hard to believe that Blessing really cannot see. She manages beautifully, just as she did before losing her eye. Doctors in Zambia said it was an impossible case and that nothing more could be done. But we never give up. We want to be certain that we’ve done everything possible. That’s why Blessing is now traveling to a pediatric clinic in Poland for a thorough assessment. We won’t rest until we know we’ve given her every chance to live fully.
