A Lesson in Life for Christopher

Date added: 07.10.2025

Sometimes, you just want to scream out of helplessness. There are moments when emotions run high, especially when you have to explain, ask, or supervise over and over again. But then reflection comes: what would I do if I were in these children’s shoes? If I had been through what they’ve been through? In that moment, anger fades, leaving humility and understanding — says Sister Mariola.

Our “mum” has incredible patience and a heart full of love, but that doesn’t mean indulgence. She can be firm when the situation calls for it. Christopher, one of our children, learned that lesson the hard way.

The boy had to repeat a grade. Just a year earlier, he was doing very well — excellent grades, one of the top students. Then suddenly, something changed, as if someone had swapped him for another child. Christopher began rebelling, ignoring school, studying, and other responsibilities. Sister Mariola saw it as the perfect moment to teach him that choices come with responsibility. She made it clear: if you want to continue your studies, you’ll have to pay yourself for the year you’re repeating.

Though he wasn’t thrilled about it, Christopher asked the Jesuit fathers to hire him on the farm. Through hard work, he earned the money to pay for school. More importantly, he learned the lesson and understood. This experience changed him. Now he motivates other boys who neglect their studies, speaking about the importance of being responsible and making the most of the opportunities they’ve been given.

Sister Mariola is warm and patient, but also consistent and demanding. She has built a Home where children grow not only in love, but also in wisdom and responsibility.

Passport to the Future – Donate a School Starter Kit

A school kit includes notebooks, allowing children to study at home. It also includes a pair of shoes, which, if not for Kasisi, they would have to borrow from their siblings. And finally, a delicious, healthy sandwich in the backpack, which gives them the energy they need for their studies. Just like the sandwich their mother would prepare. You can pack one into their backpack today—from right here, from your own home.
