Gertrude came to Kasisi with her four siblings after their world was turned upside down. Their father, struggling with addiction to alcohol and drugs, abandoned the family. Their mother, who had always cared for the children, was suddenly left alone—without any means to support five children. Although she couldn’t provide for them materially, she never stopped being present in their lives. Every Saturday, she would visit them at Kasisi to stay close to her children.
The Sisters at Kasisi immediately noticed the deep bond between the siblings. Gertrude cared for her younger brothers and sisters with tenderness and a strong sense of responsibility. They spent every free moment together, sharing what little they had and offering each other love and support. Kasisi became a place where they not only felt safe but could also begin building a better future.
It was here, for the first time, that Gertrude and her brother Peter were able to attend school. They embraced learning with joy and commitment, grateful for an opportunity they had never had before.
As time went on, their mother’s situation began to improve. As soon as she was able, she made the decision to bring Gertrude back home. Today, the girl lives with her mother again, but she continues to receive support through the “Adoptions from the Heart” program, which helps her pursue her education and grow in a safe and nurturing environment.
A school kit includes notebooks, allowing children to study at home. It also includes a pair of shoes, which, if not for Kasisi, they would have to borrow from their siblings. And finally, a delicious, healthy sandwich in the backpack, which gives them the energy they need for their studies. Just like the sandwich their mother would prepare. You can pack one into their backpack today—from right here, from your own home.
