This cruel genetic disease causes primarily pain, so our kids with sickle cell anemia need a whole lot of pain relief meds. The defective blood cells, shaped like sickles, clog blood vessels, causing pain that can be felt in the whole body. An attack can last several hours or several weeks, and sometimes ends in urgent hospital admission. Transfusions are an integral part of our children’s lives, yet they themselves carry the risk of complications… We do everything in our power to prevent such situations.
We administer pain relief meds and treatments that improve the children’s condition, minimizing the need for transfusions. Unfortunately, they are costly – the monthly cost of just hydroxyurea treatment in Zambia is about €33 Euro, and we have to take into consideration numerous pain relief meds and chelators to prevent complications from transfusions.
